Gifford Farms - Rain or Shine

Time for a wonderful day at the farm. We knew we may be in for a muddy adventure with a 70% chance of rain, and we were right! At the 'Nature Art and Science' station we learned that the farm did indeed get some rain (we got two inches at home)!

As the preschool classes marched along we quickly funneled into one line to cross the river!

VW and his friend Drew at the Outdoor Nature Classroom. Drew is going to be a farmer someday and told us all about the farm along the way.

Building a barn for the pony!

Here we actually met the real farmer of the day,
our tour guide, Farmer Paul.
His rule was no lines
(VWs teacher cringed when Farmer
Paul made the announcement)

Here we learned that farm animals eat brome
and alfafa, not straw, just the "green stuff"
for eating and the straw for sleeping!

No real pony rides at this farm, but
you did get to ride on this crazy horse
on a real sadle! VW wasn't sure what to
think but Farmer Paul got him on anyway!

The kids weren't sure what pioneers were
but they thought the covered wagon was fun!

This ruler was for measuring how tall the corn gets!
A couple years ago, the farm was covered in water!
Can you believe it was another two feet
OVER this eight foot ruler!

Once they harvest the corn in a couple weeks,
this auger will fill the grain bins, but not
these grain bins on this farm...they're still filled
with mud from the flood.

[trivia: how many corn cobs are on a husk?
Answer: one]

Can you tell me what animal sleeps in the corn bin
during the winter...raccoons.
Drew got it right, he got most of the
questions right! :)

What food do we get from trees?
Lots of fun answers here!
This 90+ year old tree was huge!
The whole class fit inside!

VW really enjoyed the goats.

Why would farmers have pigs.
Drew announced "for the bacon!"
We learned how nearly every part of
a pig has a purpose down to their toe nails.
We also learned how pigs are heroes...
for those with diabetes, burns and heart problems!

It was a good day at the farm!

I LOVE the farm, and it looks like DW does too! :-)

I can't believe that corn field flooded two feet above that measurement pole. Wow.
