IA Sweet Corn

Last week during our family reunion, we headed out to the farm to pick some IA sweet corn! YUM! It has been an extremely hot and dry summer, so we were so excited that we were able to pick some while the CA clan was here!

Once the electric fence was turned off, we all headed into the field.

Papa showed us what to look for...nice dark tassel, good thickness, and a quick peak at the kernels...

VW wasn't sure about heading in at first. He said it smelled. I had to explain that is was just the air around the farm and not the actual corn. Oh...so he headed on in and loved exploring.

Everyone showing off their dinner...

Time to head in, a couple five gallon buckets should feed this hungry crew for one meal.

We ended the picking with feeding the only four cows on the farm some field corn.

Summer Fun

This past Sunday Daddy had the opportunity to golf with Aunt M and cousins IM and EK for their Junior League Finale (Uncle S was doing his own golfing in the cool Colorado weather). They had a great time in the 100 degree weather, but not as much fun as we did...

We ended with our first bath as cousins,
lots of grass and dirt to wash away!

Monkeys

VW had a field trip to the zoo with his classmates. His teacher captured this picture in the Jungle with one of his good friends, Daxton. Daxton's mom was their chaperone and all I hear about is how much fun they had and how next time we go to the zoo Daxton can come with us!

Arr...

A few months ago I picked up this great pirate tent to have for a "rainy day" (thanks Grandma for modeling this to me). With our heat wave the past few weeks, it was time to pull it out and have a camp out inside. The boys are loving it...ahoy matey!

Marriage, Marriage Is What Brings Us Together

With our anniversary this month, we’ve been discussing marriage with VW…our wedding day, pointing out our rings, and telling him how important it is for Mommy and Daddy to have date nights! Leading to very interested discussions over the past couple weeks:
“Mommy, I am going to marry you, but where will you put your ring?”
“Mommy, we will be married and I can stay home with you!”
During a discussion with Daddy, VW learned that you can only have one spouse, to which VW responded: “well, you have to find someone else, Daddy!”
Too precious! So glad he wants to stay home with us so much! We will cherish this as long as we can!

The Grass Isn't Greener

...on the other side, it is just a different shade!

A couple weekends ago we had the wonderful opportunity to go to Grandma and Papa Ks house for some fun family time. It is always so surreal visiting my parents. It always feels like home, even though they no longer live in the home I grew up in, and I love how much fun the boys have in the simplicity of small town life.

I am also reminded that the great thing about small towns is that everyone knows each other and the thing that always hits my nerve is that everyone knows each other and everyone's business. However, as a mother the small town life intrigues, if even for a minute, as it is so great to see the boys running around the yard carefree, VW experiencing his first golf outing at the local course, leaving your keys in the car and the door to the house unlocked, and running a quick errand downtown and charging it to your account.

Then I wonder, is it really the small town life or the innocence of childhood that I have the time to experience becuase I've taken the time to slow down that I truly experience when I am not at home surrounded in my 'tasks' of the weekend.

Either way, as I pause and think about the wonderful time we had relaxing with family, enjoying the quiet time of small town life, and experiencing the stories and witnessing the drama that...

And just like the conversation of Papa and VW:

"Papa, you should turn on your sprinklers!"

"I don't have sprinklers."

"You should, your grass would be green then!!"

that life is really what you make of it! And for this momma, I am blessed with the perfect color of watered green grass!

14 Years and Counting...

It’s hard to believe that 16ish years ago, I met your Daddy, during what were once part of Mommy’s favorite activities…a track meet (i.e., running) and checking out boys. Uncle Rog introduced me to Daddy on a beautiful spring evening at a track meet in Sheldon. Hard to believe that was 16 years ago. The two things I remember about meeting your Daddy that night is that he made me laugh and I wanted to get to know him more. Sixteen years (14 of them married) later, I am so excited to say that we learn more and more about each other every day and looking across the table at this amazing man I have the honor of calling my husband and an wonderful father, I still giggle! Happy Anniversery! Looking forward to many more years of adventures, laughs, crys, and playing with the boys!

This past weekend, Nana and Papa hung out with the boys so that we could celebrate and have a true date night, including an overnight stay!
We ate yummy food at Ms Pub -
Surf and Turf for Mommy,
Daddy tried a new yummy scotch
and had a tenderloin.

Mommy's Fav - Ice Cream
Daddy at our hotels Happy Hour.

We have a FISH!

Not sure what happened in a two-week time frame AND no complaining here, but VW became a fish!
A couple weeks ago we headed to the gym to cool off in the outdoor pool. VW was tentatively excited. This past winter we had signed him up for swimming lessons…1) he did not like the indoor pool, it was too loud, 2) he did not know the instructor, 3) he could not touch the bottom of the pool, etc., etc. As we left for our adventure, first he verified if we would be inside or outside, he clarified if there would be ducks (the instructors “enticement” at swimming lessons), and inquired if we would swim with him. After much reassurance, he became excited.
At arrival, DG beamed with excitement, yet tentatively walked into the zero-depth pool. VW held Daddy’s hand tightly, then slowly became more daring. However, after a half-hour at the pool, he accidently got more water in his face to his liking and we were done. It was nearing bedtime anyway, so it was deemed a good first trip.
Then enters our fish…on the Fourth of July we headed to the country club pool with our cousins. Cousin NR jumped in immediately and started swimming around. VW watched this intrigued. Soon, VW slowly and carefully entered the pool down the steps and learned he could safely touch. Next, he held on to Daddy’s neck and went deeper in the water, taking his surroundings in. Soon he was splashing around, tipping his face in the water, swimming on Daddy’s back, and jumping to my arm (as my head cannot catch him). He giggled, cheered, and enjoyed the experience greatly. He cried when it was time to leave. (On a side note, DG loved the water, too. He couldn’t touch but held on to whoever was holding him, splashing, laughing, and tipping his head to the water.)
Friday we had the opportunity to go the pool with our cousins and Nana and Papa. It was an extremely hot week last week…100s, so any opportunity to cool off was greatly appreciated. This time VW was ready!! We had to “swim” in the baby pool at first (someone had gotten sick in the big pool and it was being cleaned). VW loved the baby pool and even started getting sticks on the bottom. DG loved the baby pool, walking back and forth, sometimes falling, but overall enjoying the cool water. Finally, we were able to get in the big pool and VW was one of the first to enter! He played, jumped around, swam on Daddy’s back and even “jumped” off the diving board!!
What a turnaround, but what a fun time for every! And this lifeguarding Mommy is very proud!  No pictures of our little fish…we were all having too much fun swimming! Look forward to our next trip to the pool and our time at the water park in SL. He finally got a good “vibe” swimming (thanks Aunt M) and nothing can stop him now!

Couches Are for Walking?

DGs new found love is to remove all the cushions from the couch and start walking!

Quite a dangerous, unsteady activity, which brings many giggles and potential injuries.

When we ask him to sit on his bum, he sits, cheers, and stands back up!

Be careful, Bubba!

Pie AND Cupcakes

For Father's Day, I asked VW what we should do for Daddy. He suggested cupcakes! Well...grand idea buddy, but Daddy is a pie guy! So, we all worked together and made Daddy a Rhubarb Meringue Pie! We even sang Happy Father's Day to the tune of Happy Birthday minus the cupcakes! ;-)
